Kano - Process Video

 

I'm almost embarrassed to post this, but I only just kinda learnt that Procreate has a time-lapse recording function. I think that's amazing. 

It is embarrassing though as I'm sure real artists will find my process...uncoordinated. I still find it fascinating to watch though.

I actually had an almost weird amount of fun drawing this. Kano was surprisingly easy to draw, I think because you never really have to worry about facial asymmetry.

Kettlebell Training

I had to draw alittle something as I was inspired by a story written by my good pal over at Jayse's Brutal Ball Busting Stories. Sounds like he's currently on sabbatical but hope he comes back soon...

Haven't had much inclination to draw last couple of months due to being distracted by, well, 2020 and all its assorted virus-related shenanigans.

I'm still struggling with faces and am beginning to suspect I may actually have a degree of mild facial aphantasia. Currently I working around it by just drawing a rough face and then moving around the components using the cut tool until it looks okay. We work with the tools we have I guess.

What worked better for me is that I'm using a bigger sized canvas, which seems to help me manipulate detail better.  This is challenging as I'm using a iPad 2018 and Procreate, the latter of which I love and the former of which I use to get by...when I first started this journey I didn't know if I'd invest in it enough to buy a better drawing tool so I just used whatever I had lying around. I like to think that I am actually getting okay enough that I should think about getting something more...extravagant.

This pic has also been a lesson in that I'm shit at background due to disinterest, mainly. By the time I've finished the subject I feel the last thing I want to do is draw a background. Something to work on :)

Sales Quota

Been awhile...the current crisis has really knocked me around, I got to say, so haven't had time to sit down and draw for quiet some time.

I really struggled with the face on this one. I find it especially challenging to draw a face that is both expressive and aesthetic.

These drawing based on a story of the same name by a guy called Mandler. I wouldn't normally be so blatant but I guess in these trying times my mind has gone to darker places.

The Orchidometer

An orchidometer is a medical instrument used to measure the volume of the testicles. It consists of a string of numbered wooden or plastic beads of increasing size, usually from about 1 to 25 ml, however the range of some models may extend to 35 ml or more. The beads are compared with the testicles of the patient, and the volume is read off the bead which matches most closely in size. Prepubertal sizes are 1–3 ml, pubertal sizes are considered 4 ml and up and adult sizes exceed 12 ml.

I have a strange fascination with this device that I can't fully explain. I think it boils down to the idea of testicles being the core of a man's masculinity, the very source of his manhood, and yet they can be measured, quantified and reduced to a objective number.

It was only a matter of time before I tried to draw this concept. 

Looking at this pic, I can tell that the execution is abit of...the proportions of the lower half are out. It was still a lesson though. No ball busting in this one lol...it's more mental ballbusting. What is your manhood worth, but a set of numbers on the orchidometer?

Kratos and the Fate of Ouranus

In Greek mythology, Ouranus, God of the Sky mates with Gaia, Goddess of the Earth and fathers many offspring whom he imprisons deep underground. Gaia, upset over the mistreatment of her children, fashions a flint sickle and convinces her youngest son, the Titan Cronus, to subdue his father. He ambushes Ouranus as he lays with Gaia, and castrates him.

Cronus fathers his own children, including Zeus who eventually rises up against him, castrating him in turn.

Which is kinda a interesting story because, I mean, it's enthrallingly fucked up, isn't it? The whole castration thing is a strange non-sequitur. Most creations myths have at least a kernel of realism to them, but the whole idea of Aphrodite springing fully formed from the severed testicles of Cronus is quite a leap....so to speak. I think it highlights the importance even the ancient minds placed on the concept of testicles as the sources of masculine power...but I'm no philosopher.

Kratos is the son of Zeus, and deposes him quite violently in the God of War games - which to be honest, I've never actually played as my old-man reflexes are not up to it. But the character concept art of bearded Kratos is hot, so I wanted to try my hand at making some fanart. I'm actually reasonably pleased by the result...I think shading was easier due to Kratos' ashen skin tone. Also I kinda enjoyed trying to figure out exactly where Kratos' new tattoo should go.

I just wonder if your average gamer is aware of the Ouranus-Cronus-Zeus repetition of history and what it implies for the Ghost of Sparta...
